What Are Refurbishment Surveys?

Before you carry out any construction work, it is a legal requirement for you to carry out an asbestos refurbishment survey. This is outlined by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2007. These are used to find and describe any asbestos that is present. They include a destructive inspection and may cause asbestos disturbance during identification.

This survey aims to ensure that nobody will be harmed when working on asbestos containing materials (ACMs) within the premises. You should try to have the survey completed as early as you can to stop any potential ACMs from being damaged. During inspection, the premises must be empty. Once the survey is complete, further checks will be carried out to ensure all areas are fit to return to.

It is worth remembering that some ACMs are categorised as license by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive). As a result, you will need to carry out a mandatory and formal 14-day notification period before you can start any removal of asbestos.
